Statement on Sudan Uprising
Sudanese Diaspora in Ireland are standing in O’Connell Street, on Saturday, 30th June 2012, at 1pm to support the revolution in their home land, towards the civil disobedience called in the country.
The opposition has called for civil disobedience in the whole country with vast demonstrations in all cities of Sudan on the 29th June after Friday’s prayers and have appealed to people to stay in the streets for the restoration of democracy, raped by Omer El Bashir and the ruling Islamists in a military- coup in 1989.
Hundreds of students and citizens have been arrested and detained by the dictatorship regime since the demonstrations started on the 16th June, in many cities and towns in the Sudan, demanding the Bashir’s rule to leave. We express our deepest concern about their lives as many of them are being tortured by the security forces and the special militia, the so called Rabatta.
The Rabatta militia (former mujahedeen) are using machetes and knives against the peacefully demonstrators and this has resulted in many injuries among the students. The government of Sudan and the National Congress Party shall take full responsibility for life threatening harms.
The Sudanese government has blocked access to the most popular Sudanese web sites, for news and social interaction:
www.sudaneseonlines.com, www.alrakoba.com and www.hurriyat.com.
Some international Arabic broadcasters have had their offices closed in Khartoum, like Al-Arabiya and al hurrah TV, to prevent the coverage of the uprising. The oppression is still continuing against journalists and many opposition newspapers have been sequestrated. Some journalists are in jail for more than a year.
Al Bashir and his party governments have ruled for 23 years. The country under these rulers, was divided. Over 90% of the people of Sudan are suffering from poverty and diseases, 300,000 were killed in Darfur conflict alone, 2,000,000 are homeless in refugee camps. And that is apart from the victims of the Nuba Mountains, and Southern Blue Nile province.
We appeal to the international community and human rights organisations, to support the Sudanese people against the regime, and to exert pressure on the government to release the detained activists and political prisoners and the freedom of speech and protests.
