Envy workers dispute Sligo

Envy Nightclub Owners, Rowan Heath Ltd. put the business into liquidation without paying their employees money owed to them and without paying any redundancy terms. Not only that, the company has refused to inform the workers if they have been made redundant or not.

Rowan Heath Ltd. – as part of its liquidation process – held a creditors meeting on Monday, 22 February 2010 in the Coach House Hotel, Ballymote. Despite being owed wages by their employer, none of the workers were officially notified of this very important meeting but found out through of word of mouth and the media.

When the workers attended the meeting, the employer:

•Refused entry to their trade union representative despite allowing other creditors having their representatives present;

•Refused to answer any of the workers concerns regarding outstanding employment issues;

•Denied the workers a creditors vote on the employers proposed liquidator.

Envy nightclub workers must now wait to see whether they will receive wages owed or redundancy money from this liquidation process. They are not holding their breath! 

These workers, many of whom have families to support, have not only lost their livelihoods but:

1.Since September 2009 had their wages slashed – in many cases by up to 45%.

2.They had their rostered hours slashed without any consultation and which further reduced their pay.

3.They have not been paid in full for work completed and some are still due outstanding holiday pay.

4.The employer has refused to inform employees of their intentions regarding this business and thus left them with no work since the start of 2010.
