Dublin City Councillors voted overwhelmingly to support the demonstration at the Dail on September 29th.

Cllr Christy Burke tabled an emergency motion which states "The Council also supports the public rally at the Department of Finance on 29 September to highlight the impact that proposed Government cuts will have on the citizens of Dublin". Well done Cllr. Burke.

There was no debate on the issue but the vast majority of councillors voted for the resolution. What needs to be done now is for a representative group of councillors to hold a press conference and to call on the citizens of Dublin to come out in big numbers for this important protest. September 29 is the day the Dail returns. September 29 is the date for renewal of the bank guarantee. September 29 is the European-wide day of action against cuts.

Councillors can contribute to stopping cuts by encouraging their voters to come out on the streets and do more than just passing motions.

If we build for a massive protest on September 29 it has to be the start of many protests of people power to get rid of this government and their policies. Let's take lessons from the French. Millions of French workers took to the streets this week to stop their government raising the pension age from 60 to 62. By comparison our government will try to raise it from 65 to 68.

And the cuts will hit the community sector very hard. The Government will try to get rid of over 3,000 decent jobs and replace them with workfare or Work for Dole. Its in all our interests – workers, unemployed, community sector, students and pensioners - to join together in opposition to the cuts and make history on September 29.
