Launch of AMACH! LGBT Galway

10/07/2010

Rainbow flags flew over Galway city for the day as AMACH! LGBT Galway was launched on Monday 5th July. AMACH! LGBT will serve as an umberella group for the LGBT community in Galway. It aims to support the development of an accessible and safe resource centre for the community; to influence and bring about change in key issues such as marraige and adoption rights for gay people; and to work for the provision of services for the lgbt community in Galway city and County.

At a very colourful City Museum which was draped in a giant rainbow flag Senator David Norris perform the ceremonies to an audience of up to 150 which included many locals, representatives from lgbt groups around the country, political representatives from the Labour Party,  Fine Gael Galway County Mayor, and Socialist Worker Party activists. However, none of the Government parties attended, including the FF Galway City Mayor - who did manage to issue an apology but no representative!

In his speech David Norris criticised the recent Civil Partnership Bill for not going far enough and failing to give recognition to gay parents and their children who still have no legal status.

The SWP leafleted for their public meeting on Monday 12th July "Civil Partnership - Is that it? The fight for gay rights" to be held in Richardsons meeting room, Eyre Square, galway City a 8pm.
