Tell the Assembly:
Invest in Green jobs & energy
Invest in Public transport
No to cuts in Public Services
Today all across the world we have two forces. On one side we have millions of people taking a stand and demanding action on climate change ,on the other side we have bosses and politicians - in the Assembly, Barack Obama in the US and Gordon Brown in Britain - doing nothing to avoid climate chaos.
The UN summit in Copenhagen is the one chance government leaders had since Kyoto to make a planet saving deal about climate change. But instead of acting, they will do little or nothing to reduce carbon emissions.
This is another example of how bosses don't act when it comes to the issues affecting working people’s lives.
In order to avoid climatic disaster the Assembly needs to cuts carbon emissions by at least 70%.
Climate change along with unemployment and cutbacks are issues we are told the Assembly can do nothing about. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The solution to climate change and the jobs crisis does not lie in making ‘sacrifices’ or ‘tightening of belts’ but in Stormont investing more in a public transport system to stop the reliance on oil fuelled cars. They should also start an emergency programme to create thousands of green jobs - building wind turbines and other sources of renewable energy.
We need planning not market madness
We have the technology at our disposal to stop climate change right now. The only obstacle in the way is capitalism and the ruling class. The Kyoto treaty proposed maket based solutions but they have completely failed to save the planet - in fact they made things worse.
Bosses now also say we must accept cutbacks and privatisation in public services to save a mad system that is destroying the planet.
It is 'people power', the strength of working class people, trade unionists, students –who can challenge these cuts and can force action on climate change.
As the world continues to get warmer and freak weather events happen on a more regular basis we need action now to save the planet from becoming inhabitable. That means massive, planned government led investment. It also means breaking with a system, capitalism, that puts profits before the planet and people's lives.
It is up to us who want to save the planet to act now. If you agree join the Socialist Workers Party.
