A year ago the Labour Party made history by becoming the most popular party in the state for the first time.Eamon Gilmore was also the most popular candidate for Taoiseach at 46%.

Before the General election, on February 21st, the Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn signed a USI election pledge, on behalf of the Labour Party, promising not to re-introduce third level fees and to protect student supports in schools.
Now in power, Labour has reneged on their promises by increasing the registration fee to €2,000. Quinn refused to rule out the re-introduction of full tuition fees.
The increased charge will push those from low income backgrounds further out of third level education.

For revolutionary socialists change comes from mass workers action, from people taking things into their own hands.The Labour Party claim they have a more ‘realistic’ approach, which presently involves getting into government with the Tories of Fine Gael. Yet, even on Labour’s own terms, every coalition situation in the past has led to a growth in support for the larger party and the demoralisation of Labour activists and its working-class supporters.

Whenever they hear anyone talk a little left wing they go berserk. This week, Joan Burton’s joined a panel on the Vincent Browne show with Joe Higgins and could barely contain her anger at having to sit next to him.
Her long monologues and accusations that she was being harangued was a thin disguise to hide the fact that Labour had d one a backroom deal with Fianna Fail to let the Finance Bill go through.
